This two-day trip takes you to the beautiful Lasithi Plateau, one of the most traditional areas of Crete. The Dikti Mountains surround this peaceful highland. The area is famous for its 18 villages, old windmills, rich soil, and strong myths.
DAY 1 Culture, Nature, and Local Life
First, we visit the historic Monastery of Kera Kardiotissa. Local nuns take care of this quiet monastery. Inside, you can see 14th-century frescoes and a well-known icon of the Virgin Mary. Many people believe this icon has special powers.
Next, we stop at a traditional pottery workshop. Here, local artists show you how they make Cretan ceramics by hand. They still use old techniques that families pass down through generations.
After that, we continue to the village of Tzermiado. There, you check into your rooms and leave your bags. Then, you have time to relax before the afternoon activity.
Around midday, a local guide leads a three-hour bike tour around the Lasithi Plateau. During the ride, you pass through small villages and meet local farmers. You can also taste fresh fruits and vegetables directly from the fields. If you are lucky, someone may offer you a small glass of raki, the traditional Cretan drink.
In the evening, we return to Tzermiado for dinner. You enjoy a home-cooked meal with oven-baked pork or chicken, potatoes, Greek salad, tzatziki, bread, and a glass of wine or a soft drink.
After dinner, you have free time. You can relax and enjoy the peaceful summer evening in the mountains.
DAY 2 Slow Morning and Optional Activities
On the second day, you start with a traditional Cretan breakfast. You can enjoy fresh local cheese, bread, and seasonal fruits.
Then, the rest of the morning is free. You may relax or speak with the local guide about an extra activity. For example, you can take a short walk in nature or try another light outdoor activity. Since the land around the plateau is flat, it is easy to explore.
Finally, in the early afternoon, we begin our return journey. After two days in the Cretan countryside, you return home with beautiful memories and a true experience of local life.
