We set out on Arkadi Excursion – Kournas, Rethymno with a sightseeing tour in the sacramental site of the Monastery of Arkadi. The presence of the monastery in the life of Crete for almost eight centuries surely constitutes a remarkable and integral part of its history.
The monastery was first completely formed during the Venetian occupation on the island, as anyone can understand looking at its Renaissance architecture. From the first moment of the Cretan Revolt, the monastery was the epicenter of the Cretan struggles.
The greatest sacrifice of the island may have been the Holocaust of Arkadi, as it was not only a symbol of the Cretan independence but also the deed that incited the philhellenic feelings all over Europe.
Today it functions as a monastery but it also houses a museum which displays exhibits from its entire history.
Our next stop, is the beautiful, picturesque lake of Kournas, the sole freshwater lake on the island. It is a natural freshwater biotope that accommodates a great variety of rare aquatic organisms. You can walk around the lake, feed the ducks, enjoy the magnificent scenery and complete the idyllic picture having your lunch in one of the small taverns that are situated by the lake.
Our last destination is the town of Rethimnon, this exquisite amalgam of civilizations, with the Venetian buildings and the grand Turkish minarets of excellent artistic quality. Rethimnon is a town that maintains its Renaissance beauty and combines it ideally with the modern comforts. A town that lives every moment of its 800 years of history.
